Dental surgeries

Dental surgeries can often be a cause of worry for patients. We strongly encourage talking to your preferred dentist if you have any concerns about getting surgery done, as well as opt to get a second opinion, just in case. Dental surgeries usually are not complicated and the patient is discharged from the hospital within a few hours.

Tooth extractions and root canal treatment are also simple dental surgeries, but can be performed in a dentist’s office.

Dental extraction

The most common surgical operation is the simple tooth extraction – or getting a tooth removed. Dental surgeries should be performed by a qualified oral surgeon.

Extraction involves removal of a tooth, done usually when the tooth has decayed to an extent that cannot be repaired. Extraction is sometimes cheaper compared to treatment and repair of a decayed tooth.

Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is an oral surgery usually performed by a regular dentist under mild sedation or local anesthesia. The root canal and the pulp of the tooth are removed and the canal is filled. After that, a permanent cap is placed on the tooth

Specialized oral surgery

Your dentist might recommend an orthodontic surgery in case the jaws are not aligned properly and the patients is undergoing orthodontic treatment. This surgery is carried out by a maxillofacial surgeon (oral surgeon).

This type of surgery is carried out by breaking the jaws and aligning them again, which changes the entire structure of the face. This type of surgery might change the facial appearance, however it isn’t necessary done only for cosmetic reasons. It can also help improve chewing, breathing and also speech problems.

Wisdom teeth extraction

When the wisdom teeth get impacted in the gums you need to get the help of an oral surgeon. The wisdom teeth when impacted will try to push the other teeth making the mouth misaligned and crooked. This is especially true if the patient has undergone an orthodontic treatment. The gum needs to be cut and opened to remove the teeth. This is done under anesthesia. Once the teeth are removed the oral surgeon places stitches in the mouth. This surgery is usually performed on wisdom teeth but can also be carried out on the other teeth as well.

Impacted Teeth

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are usually the last set of teeth to develop in humans. They emerge from the gum line and the jaw is large enough to allow room for them, but most often this is not the case.

Usually one or more of these teeth fail to emerge in proper alignment. In other cases wisdom teeth fail to fully emerge through the gum line - and is entrapped (impacted) between the jawbone and the gums.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause swelling, pain and infection of the gum. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause permanent damage to nearby teeth, gums, and bone. They also can lead to formation of cysts or tumors, which can destroy (sections of) the jaw. Dentists recommend patients with impacted wisdom teeth to consider having them surgically removed.

Sometimes other teeth, like the cuspids and bicuspids can become impacted too.

Tooth loss/missing teeth

Dental implants are a preferred option those experiencing for tooth loss due to an accident or other cause like an infection. Implants are also used as an alternative to non-permanent options like bridges and dentures.

Oral surgery for jaw-related problems

In some cases the upper and lower jaws of a patient fail to grow properly, which can cause difficulty in speaking, eating, swallowing or even breathing. Similar problems like improper teeth alignment can be corrected with non-surgical methods like braces and various orthodontic appliances. More serious jaw problems may require oral surgery.

More surgically treated oral conditions

• Cleft lip and cleft palate repair procedures
• Facial infections
• Facial injury repair procedures
• Lesion removal and biopsy
